Hungary drawn with Portugal, Denmark, Ireland, and Armenia for World Cup 2026
In the latest draw held in Zurich, the Hungarian national football team has been placed in a competitive group for the European qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Hungarian team will compete against the winners of the Portugal-Denmark UEFA Nations League quarterfinal, along with Ireland and Armenia.
Qualification Format
During the draw, six groups of five teams and six groups of four teams were established. The teams finishing at the top of their respective groups will directly qualify for the World Cup. Teams finishing in second place will have a chance to advance through playoffs.
Upcoming Matches
Hungary will be playing its World Cup qualifying matches in the fall, with an immediate focus on the two-legged playoff against Turkey in March as part of the Nations League, where they aim to maintain their top-tier status. The Hungarian team has not qualified for a World Cup since 1986, but the 2026 tournament will see an increase in teams from 32 to 48, taking place across the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
