Wizz Air to refund thousands of passengers for misleading practices

The Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) announced that Wizz Air has been found guilty of misleading its passengers. The airline was deemed to have engaged in unfair trading practices by withholding crucial information from customers between December 2022 and May 2023, which resulted in additional costs for travelers.

Refund Details

Passengers who booked return flights were unable to complete the free online check-in via mobile browsers, forcing them to pay a €40 (approximately 16,000 HUF) airport check-in fee. Acknowledging a technical glitch, Wizz Air has committed to refunding 120% of this check-in fee to thousands of affected customers, with the option to receive 100% of the refund in cash within a year. This compensation process, which began prior to the GVH's announcement, is expected to exceed 80 million HUF in total refunds.

Next Steps for Wizz Air

The GVH has stated that they will impose penalties only if Wizz Air fails to fulfill its compensation obligations. The authority will follow up on the execution of these reimbursements. Furthermore, Wizz Air is required to notify the affected passengers through email and its mobile app and is expected to provide general information about the issue. The GVH emphasizes that airlines should present ticket sales information in a clear and understandable manner.
