Wizz Air goes cashless

Starting April 1, 2025, Wizz Air will eliminate the option for cash payments on its flights. Passengers will be required to pay for onboard purchases using bank cards or digital payment methods such as Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Android Pay, and Google Pay.

This policy change was announced shortly after the right to cash usage was highlighted in Hungary's constitution.

Reasons for the New Policy

Wizz Air states that the transition to cashless transactions aims to improve the quality of onboard services. They believe that moving away from cash not only expedites service but also enhances hygiene, as crew members will no longer need to handle cash, contributing to a cleaner and safer travel environment.

In addition to this change, passengers can also purchase reloadable vouchers through the Wizz Air mobile app to use for onboard purchases. New guidelines accompanying the cashless policy include:

  • A maximum combined spending limit of €150 per passenger for onboard purchases.

  • Presentation of a boarding pass is required for transactions of €50 or more.

Wizz Air will accept bank and credit cards from major issuers like Visa and Mastercard, as well as Revolut cards.

Government Response

The Hungarian Ministry led by János Lázár, which is responsible for guaranteeing the right to cash, has been approached for comment regarding how Wizz Air's new policy aligns with upcoming regulations. Any responses will be shared when available.
