Teachers in Hungary will get a salary increase from January 2025

Starting January 1, 2025, teachers in Hungary will see their salaries rise by an average of 21.2%.

This increase applies to both school and kindergarten teachers and will benefit approximately 140,000 educators in public education and vocational training.

Government Funding

The Interior Ministry's proposal has outlined that 88% of the funds required for these salary increases will be provided by the Hungarian government, with the remaining 12% coming from the European Union. For the wage increases planned in 2025, a budget of HUF 339 billion (around EUR 821 million) has been allocated, along with HUF 323.5 billion (approximately EUR 784 million) saving from the 2024 budget for further increases in the future.

Differentiated Increases and Special Cases

The proposal also includes specific wage increases based on the subjects taught. For instance, educators specializing in crucial subjects like mathematics and sciences will receive an additional 7% salary bump in 2025, as opposed to the previously guaranteed 4% increase for 2024. Additionally, teachers working with disadvantaged students will see their wages rise significantly. In regions classified as "catching-up" or beneficiary municipalities, teachers will earn 20% more than their counterparts in other areas.

Commitment to Fair Salaries

The government has committed that by 2024, the average teacher's salary will reach 71.8% of the average graduate salary, with the goal of increasing to 80% by 2025. This plan indicates a push toward improved conditions and compensation within the education sector, highlighting the importance of attracting and retaining quality educators.
