Rising thefts at duty-free shops in Budapest Airport

The airport police respond to around 500 to 600 crimes annually, with thefts being the predominant issue.

While there was a notable increase in luggage theft at one point, the implementation of mandatory body cameras for ground handling staff has significantly reduced this problem. However, a new wave of crime has emerged: traveling thieves.

New Tactics of Traveling Thieves

These criminals often take advantage of low-cost airline tickets to travel within Europe, specifically targeting duty-free shops at airports. They typically steal smaller yet valuable items, such as designer perfumes and sunglasses. It's reported that a thief can visit two to three airports in one day, swiftly navigating through transit shops before boarding the next flight. Deputy Colonel Bráda mentioned that Budapest Airport is equipped with extensive surveillance, leading to a near 100% detection rate for such thefts. The footage from security cameras often provides crucial evidence for identifying culprits.
