Péter Magyar to remain a member of the European Parliament

On January 15, 2025, Magyar Péter announced via Facebook that he will continue as a Member of the European Parliament (EP). In an online vote that concluded at noon on the same day, an impressive 95% of the 62,163 voters supported his decision to remain in office.

The voting, which started on Tuesday, saw more than 65,000 participants, with 3,259 votes against his continuation.

Remarks on Political Courage

In his post, Magyar addressed Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and fellow EP member Tamás Deutsch, challenging them to demonstrate their confidence by allowing early elections. He expressed that if Orbán truly believes that things are going well, he should return from India, gather his courage, and engage with the public about their political future.

Magyar, who leads the Tisza Party, had announced the vote regarding his mandate after six months in the EP. Initially set to close at 7 PM on Tuesday, the results were postponed to noon Wednesday to accommodate voters who had received confirmation emails later than expected. By the original deadline, around 48,000 had voted, with approximately 46,000 in favor of him keeping his mandate.

Background on His Decision

Last April, Magyar mentioned that he did not wish to remain in the EP and preferred to work domestically until 2026. However, by mid-June, he revealed that many had encouraged him to accept the position if he won the election as the lead candidate of the Tisza Party. This prompted him to initiate the online vote concerning his future in the European Parliament.
