No more border control between Hungary and Romania
As of midnight on January 1, 2025, Romania officially joined the Schengen Area, which has resulted in the elimination of regular border checks between Hungary and Romania.
This development means that Hungary will no longer conduct routine checks at the border with Romania, significantly improving cross-border travel.
New Protocols
From now on, border control will involve random checks rather than systematic inspections, lasting for a trial period of six months. Senior officials from Hungary and Romania were present at the Csanádpalota border crossing to commemorate this significant change. Hungarian police chief János Balogh and Romanian border police chief Cornel-Laurian Stoica jointly inaugurated the new protocol, which included the performance of national anthems by the Hungarian Police Band.
Hungarian parliamentary state secretary for foreign economic affairs Magyar Levente noted the importance of Romania's accession to the Schengen Zone for enhancing economic, social, and transportation connections along the Hungarian-Romanian border. The removal of border checks will facilitate free movement for millions and is seen as a step towards strengthening ties between the two countries.
