New Hungary Airlines issued ICAO code after test flights

Hungary Airlines Ltd. has officially received its operational identifier as a new Hungarian airline.

The company performed several test flights starting December 23, using a state-owned Airbus A330F cargo plane that has been assigned the ICAO code "HUA" and identified with the callsign "BUDAPEST."

The issuance of the Air Operator Certificate (AOC) by the Aviation Authority likely occurred in December, enabling the airline to commence its operations. Hungary Airlines also holds the EASA Part-CAMO certification required for continuing airworthiness management organizations.

Although Hungary Airlines is partially a Hungarian initiative, it has significant Chinese backing. The airline was previously known as Hungary Cargo Airlines Ltd. and Universal Translink Airline Hungary Ltd., associated with the Chinese cargo company Universal Translink (Utlink). Its operations include air cargo routes connecting Budapest with cities like Hangzhou, Zhengzhou, and even Hong Kong to Madrid.

Government Involvement

In late November, the state-owned Air Hungary Zrt. acquired a stake in Hungary Airlines. This company is set to operate under the Foreign Affairs Ministry to conduct humanitarian flights and air transport of goods deemed crucial for the economy.

Moreover, the company aims to enhance Hungary's logistical capabilities, support government flight operations, and develop both water and sport aviation, airport development, and aviation education and training.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has outlined that some responsibilities will be executed through Air Hungary Zrt., emphasizing the company's role in these areas.
