New bulk waste system for Budapest
Starting January 1, 2027, Budapest will implement a new waste collection system that allows households to dispose of bulk waste for free once a year, following registration.
During a two-year transition period from 2025 to 2027, neighborhoods will have the option to either continue with the current practice of placing waste on the street or adopt the new system, which includes designated collection points. This information was shared by Csaba Lantos, the Minister of Energy, during a press conference.
Goals for a Greener System
According to Alexandra Szentkirályi, leader of the Fidesz-KDNP parliamentary group in the city, the new solution aims to create a waste collection system that is not only greener and cleaner but also more considerate of public safety and the interests of Budapest residents.
Oscar Világi, Deputy CEO of the MOL Group, mentioned that currently, 30,000 to 40,000 tons of waste are placed on the streets during bulk waste collection in Budapest, with a goal to ensure that 80% of this waste is recyclable.
