National Athletics Center Budapest opens to the public
The National Athletics Center, which served as a venue for the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, has officially opened its doors to the public.
Located in the IX District, the park welcomes visitors daily from 7 AM to 9 PM, as announced by the Sport State Secretariat.
Legacy and Future Prospects
Adam Schmidt, the state's secretary for sports, emphasized the importance of the center as a lasting legacy from the World Championships. In 2026, it will host a new elite athletics series finale. The design aims to cultivate both professional and community sports, encouraging more residents to engage in outdoor activities. Although outdoor sports are less common during winter, it is hoped that the center will become a focal point for the community starting next spring.
Features of the Facilities
After the 2023 championships, mobile seating was removed, and upgrades were made to the surrounding park. The primary attraction is a panoramic running track located on the upper level of the stadium, offering stunning views of the city and the Danube River. In addition to the running track, the facility includes various outdoor sports equipment. The adjacent "Stadium Park" also features a playground, fitness areas with street workout equipment, and accessible facilities. More experienced athletes can take advantage of two large bouldering walls and a skatepark, suitable for skateboards, rollerblades, BMX bikes, and scooters. Moreover, a sandy beach area with loungers is available along the riverbank.
