MÁV issues record 128,000 HUF fine for no train ticket
In 2024, the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) reported issuing fines for ticket evasion, with a total of 24,100 incidents recorded last year. In a noteworthy case, one passenger was fined a staggering 128,000 HUF, setting a record for the highest penalty.
The company shared this information on Facebook, highlighting the substantial amount of fines collected despite a reduction in the number of fare evaders.
Total Revenue from Fines
Overall, MÁV managed to recover nearly 61 million HUF from about 7,500 ticket evasion cases in 2024. Currently, MÁV is handling a larger backlog, with around 80,000 passengers owing a collective total of over 5 billion HUF in unpaid fines. The bus services also reported over 3,000 fines last year, contributing approximately 30.5 million HUF in total revenue from penalties.
