Investigation into Hungary Euronet ATMs
The Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) has initiated an investigation into Euronet Banktechnikai Kft., the company operating a network of ATMs.
Authorities suspect the company might be misleading consumers through the presentation of ATM functions on the screens. The concern is that the interface may lead users to incur unnecessary additional fees.
Specific Concerns
Since July 5, 2023, Euronet's ATMs have displayed only two options on the main screen: "cash and balance" and "other." According to the GVH, this could create the impression that users must select both cash withdrawal and balance inquiry together, thus inadvertently leading them to pay for both services despite being able to access them separately under the "other" category.
Next Steps in the Inquiry
The GVH has a three-month period to conduct this investigation, after which it's expected to determine if Euronet has violated any laws. The outcome could result in significant consequences for the company, depending on the findings.
