Hungary to launch HUSAT satellite network

This ambitious program includes the launch of a geostationary satellite, HUGEO, alongside eight additional low Earth orbit satellites (HULEO) by 2032.

The initiative is led by 4iG Space and Defense Ltd., marking the largest privately funded satellite program in Hungary and the Central Eastern European region, according to CEO István Sárhegyi.

Future Capabilities

The upcoming facility in Martonvásár is poised to support the comprehensive design, assembly, and operation of the satellites, including data analysis. Sárhegyi indicated that the goal is to cover everything from design and manufacturing to testing and data processing, excluding the launch itself. The company aims to evolve into a fully integrated satellite communication and Earth observation service provider.

Industry Growth and Strategic Importance

Sárhegyi emphasized the importance of a private entity like 4iG in Hungary's burgeoning space sector, which currently lacks significant large corporate presence compared to other industries. The firm plans to connect with smaller enterprises, research institutes, and universities to bolster Hungary's space industry. An existing partnership with Rheinmetall, established in 2021, reflects this ambition to attract major projects and enhance the local ecosystem.

Furthermore, the company envisions utilizing existing knowledge and infrastructure to develop a new ground station with Hungaro DigiTel Ltd. This would facilitate data processing capabilities from satellite-generated information, crucial for applications in both civil and defense sectors.

Local Production Facilities

The satellite production facility will include advanced laboratories to ensure that devices meet the stringent conditions necessary for space travel. The plants will support testing and production for satellites weighing up to 400 kilograms, with the aim of operational readiness by 2026.

The site will employ around 300-400 members of staff, integrating local talents and inviting experienced Hungarian and international researchers back to the country. 4iG aims to harness both localized expertise and global best practices to establish a leading position in the European satellite market.
