How to apply for or renew a Hungarian TAJ card
A TAJ number is the Hungarian social security number and the TAJ card contains your number and acts as proof of registration when you visit healthcare facilities.
What is TAJ?
TAJ stands for Társadalombiztosítßsi Azonos Jel. It entitles you to free treatment at hospitals and lets you register with a doctor.
You also get discounts on some prescription medication.
What's the difference between your TAJ number and a TAJ card?
Your TAJ number is your Hungarian social security number. It’s 9 digits long and proves you eligibility for free healthcare. Whenever you visit a public health facility or a pharmacy to pick up a prescription, you’ll need to provide this number.
Your TAJ card is a laminated paper card you receive when you register. It’s an easy way for you to show your TAJ number as required. Without it, you may be asked to show ID alongside providing your TAJ number.
The TAJ cards Hungarians receive do not have an expiry date, but the ones issued to foreigners will expire.
Who’s entitled to a TAJ card?
Anyone that’s an employee, registered self-employed and paying taxes, or you’re the owner of a company, you’re entitled to coverage and must register for a TAJ card.
If you’re working here for a shorter period you may be covered by your home country's social security program or you can get private insurance.
You’ll also need one if you're an EU/EEA citizen living here and not covered by the EHIC scheme via your home country.
Can I get a TAJ card if I’m not working?
If you’re a resident of Hungary with a laminate address card and you’ve held it for at least 1 year and you’re an EEA citizen or a third-country national with a permanent residence permit, then you have the option of paying 8,000 HUF per month as a social security contribution to then be eligible for a TAJ card.
What documents do you need to apply for/renew your TAJ card?
Like most things in Hungary that involve government administration, you’ll need your passport, residence permit, and address card.
If you’re renewing your TAJ card, you’ll need to take your old one with you.
Where to go to apply for/renew your TAJ card
In Budapest, you’ll need to visit the NEAK office. You can visit without an appointment, but depending on how busy they are you may need to wait to be seen.
