Fines proposed for Budapest Pride attendees

A new legislative proposal from Hungary's ruling party, Fidesz, seeks to impose fines of up to 200,000 HUF on individuals who participate in Pride events.

This initiative was presented on Monday morning, with the goal of amending the country’s assembly law to restrict gatherings that depict sexuality or deviate from traditional gender identities.

Key Details

The proposed changes would classify events promoting homosexuality or gender identity transition as illegal gatherings. Both organizers and participants of such events could face penalties, with fines ranging from a minimum of 6,500 HUF to a maximum of 200,000 HUF.

Notably, the fines cannot be substituted with community service or detention, as stated by the proponents of the amendment. Instead, the collected fines will be allocated for child protection purposes.

Should an individual fail to pay the imposed fine within 30 days of the ruling becoming final, the debt will be enforced like a tax.
