Dogs and bikes travel free on MÁV trains plus Budapest VOLÁN busses and HÉV

From January 1, 2025, dog and bicycle transport will be free on the MÁV Group's trains, the HÉV lines (H5, H6, H7, H8, H9), and select VOLÁN bus routes within Budapest.

This initiative applies to passengers who hold a valid Budapest public transport pass, a Pest County pass (full price or discounted), a national pass, an unemployment benefit pass with a photo, or any other entitlement to free travel within the city.

According to the new regulations, one bicycle or one dog can be transported free of charge per passenger. If more than one bicycle or dog is being transported, the usual fees will still apply.

Transport Guidelines

It is important to note that the free transport of bicycles and dogs is only applicable for trips within the city limits. Passengers traveling on InterCity, express, or certain international trains will still need to purchase a bicycle ticket. Additionally, bicycles are not permitted on city buses due to safety and design limitations.

For dog transport, dogs must be kept on a leash and wear a muzzle, and owners must carry a valid vaccination certificate that is no more than one year old. Small and medium-sized dogs weighing up to 20 kilograms can be transported without a closed container on second-class trains, provided the leash and muzzle remain on during the journey. Passengers may be asked to present the dog's vaccination certificate if required.

Outside Budapest

Beyond the administrative borders of Budapest, dog and bicycle transport will remain subject to fees. A single ticket for a bicycle or dog transport costs 500 HUF, while members of the Hungarian Cyclists' Club and START Club cardholders can buy tickets for 375 HUF. Additionally, monthly national passes are available, allowing transport on nearly all MÁV-START, GYSEV, and HÉV services, with the monthly bicycle pass priced at 4,950 HUF and the dog pass at 1,890 HUF, exclusively for dog transport on VOLÁN services.

This new measure aims to promote sustainable and convenient transportation, aligning with the newly introduced tariff system and the five-point transportation action plan by the Ministry of Construction and Transport. The initiative not only offers an eco-friendly alternative but also simplifies the process of bicycle and dog transport within the city, ensuring passenger comfort and safety.
