In 2024, Hungary experienced an unprecedented decline in birth rates, with only 77,500 children born. This figure represents a decrease of 77,725 compared to the previous year, according to a quick report by the Central Statistical Office (KSH).
This marks the lowest number of births recorded in Hungary since the KSH began tracking data in 1949.

The KSH also reported that 127,500 people passed away in 2024, which is 676 fewer than in 2023. As a result of the number of births and deaths, Hungary saw a natural decrease of 50,000 individuals, a significant increase of 16% compared to the previous year's figure of 42,951.
Marriage Trends
In addition to declining birth rates, there was a decrease in marriages, with 46,550 couples tying the knot—3,589 fewer than the year prior. The KSH noted that the highest number of marriages occurred in winter, with varying registration percentages throughout the year compared to 2023.
