Christmas trees prices in Hungary up 5-10%

According to market traders, prices for Christmas trees in Hungary are projected to rise by 5-10% compared to last year, as reported by MTI.

A recent survey conducted by Agroinform.hu indicates that the cost for various types of fir trees will range as follows this season:

- Spruce: between 5,000 and 5,500 HUF per meter

- Silver Fir: between 6,000 and 8,000 HUF

- Nordmann Fir: between 8,000 and 10,000 HUF

Consumer Spending Habits

The survey reveals that 72% of consumers plan to spend at least 7,000 HUF on Christmas trees. Additionally, 44% intend to spend over 10,000 HUF, while 22% will spend more than 15,000 HUF. The Nordmann Fir remains the most popular choice, preferred by 62% of respondents, up from 54% in 2022. Meanwhile, 22% plan to buy Spruce and 14% prefer Silver Fir.

Interestingly, 60% of buyers expect to purchase trees larger than 1.5 meters, and about 12.5% are interested in trees with roots sold in a ball of soil. A quarter of respondents indicated that they will be opting for artificial trees instead of natural ones this year.

In Hungary, approximately 600-700 family-managed farms cultivate Christmas trees over 3,000 to 3,500 hectares. This production represents about 75% of domestic demand. Cultivators report facing challenges due to warmer and more unpredictable weather, leading to increased pest issues, which necessitates more extensive plant protection efforts.
