By-election held in Tolna County

This by-election is being held in Tolna County's 2nd electoral district, encompassing towns such as Dombóvár and Bonyhád, following the unexpected death of Fidesz MP Árpád János Potápi last October.

Despite the heightened political atmosphere, the Fidesz party is not at risk of losing its two-thirds majority in parliament. The upcoming election is anticipated to be primarily a contest for second place between opposition parties like the DK (Democratic Coalition) and Mi Hazánk (Our Homeland Movement).

Candidates in the Running

Voters will have six candidates on their ballots:

1. Pál Péter Ágoston - Communications Director of the Second Reform Era party.

2. Dóra Dúró - Deputy Chair of Mi Hazánk, has local roots in Dombóvár.

3. Ernő Vilcsek - Former Mayor of Jákfalva and current leader of the Political Homeless Coalition.

4. Krisztina Csibi - Fidesz-KDNP candidate and director of the House of Hungarians for the past ten years.

5. Gábor Harangozó - Former MP and Deputy Chair of MSZP, running as an independent.

6. László Takács - The only locally based opposition candidate affiliated with DK.

The election could have been more significant had the Tisza Party chosen to participate, but they opted out, citing that they prefer to focus their efforts on the 2026 elections.

Implications for Voter Turnout

Traditionally, by-elections see lower voter turnout, a trend likely to be exacerbated by cold January weather and the recent holiday season. Regardless of the actual participation levels, Fidesz politicians are expected to herald any turnout as a success, promoting the image of their continued stability.

The key question remains which opposition party will emerge as the strongest contender. With the Tisza Party absent from the race, the other four opposition parties will aim to capitalize on this opportunity, raising the stakes for local electoral strategies.

Polling stations across the 58 localities will remain open until 7 PM, allowing a total of 57,011 registered voters to cast their votes. Results will be reported later tonight.
