BKK removes some passes, MOL Bubi increases prices in 2025

Starting January 7, 2025, several types of transport passes will be discontinued, as announced by the Budapest Transport Center (BKK) on Monday.

These changes align with a new tariff system introduced on March 1 and are designed to better fit customer purchasing behaviors.

The following passes will no longer be available:

- Half-month (15-day) and discounted annual Budapest passes for students in primary education.

- Quarterly, semester, and discounted annual Budapest passes for university students.

- Quarterly and discounted annual Budapest passes for seniors.

- Group 24-hour ticket for Budapest.

- Passes for dogs and bicycles will also be eliminated. However, individuals with valid passes or who are eligible for free travel may still transport one dog or one bicycle for free on trains, HÉV (suburban railway), and inter-city or regional buses, provided they comply with transportation regulations.

BKK noted that ticket holders who wish to travel with a dog or bicycle will still need to purchase separate tickets. Alternatively, the bicycle country pass can be used for transporting bicycles.

Upcoming Changes to MOL Bubi Rental Fees

Additional changes are also set to take effect in the MOL Bubi bicycle rental service from January. According to BKK's announcement, modifications to usage fees are necessary to maintain service quality and manage increasing operational costs.

Starting January 7:

- The monthly pass will see a price increase from 1,000 HUF to 1,500 HUF.

- The per-minute rental fee will rise from 40 HUF to 50 HUF.

- The annual pass will be eliminated, replaced by a semi-annual pass available for 6,500 HUF.

- The current bank card registration fee will decrease to 100 HUF, which will be credited back during the first rental.

The annual pass is being phased out due to BKK's existing service contract expiring in December 2025, coupled with the upcoming implementation of the Bubi 3.0 system. Current annual passes cannot be transferred to the new system due to technical reasons, prompting the switch to a semi-annual option for regular users of the service.

After January 7, customers with existing annual passes can continue to use them until expiration; however, fees for use exceeding 30 minutes will increase to 50 HUF, and it will no longer be possible to purchase a new annual pass.
